Governor’s executive order won’t apply within the county

Commissioners voted to not apply Governor Kelly's executive order No. 20-59 that was enacted on July 20th. Commissioner Jim Howell said it would add confusion by duplicating orders already enacted locally.

In attendance at Wednesday's meeting was Health Officer Dr. Garold Minns. He said that while not perfect, masks are currently the best way to help slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Dr. Minns says he'll be watching health statistics carefully over the next 2-3 weeks, to watch for any potential impacts of the Labor Day holiday and the start of classes at USD 259.

Along with reviewing the percentage of positive COVID-19 tests, he’ll examine how hospitals are handling the amount of patients before the mandate's current expiration date of October 21. The doctor says he wants to see the positivity rate drop to 5% or less and make sure the hospitals are handling the COVID-19 patient load sufficiently before deciding on the future fate of the mask mandate and other health orders.
