WATCH: The Story Behind Roger Daltrey and Mic Swinging

March 1, 2017

March 1 marks the birthday of The Who’s very own Roger Daltrey. So of course, to mark the occasion, we had to talk microphones. Particularly, we had to talk about the art of microphone swinging—because can you really honor Daltrey without praising his dexterous mic swinging? I mean look at this stuff!

Not many people could swing a mic with the speed, power, and agility that Daltrey exuded. If you got close enough for that swinging mic to graze your skin, it’d burn clean off. And the craziest part of it all is the ease with which he catches the mic and continues singing without skipping a beat. Every. Single. Time.

So where did Daltrey’s infamous mic swing come from? To make a long story short: Chuck Berry and boredom. But you can hear it straight from the horse’s mouth in the below interview.

Happy birthday, Roger Daltrey, you mic swinging prodigy, you.
